Mark Gregory is a Lecturer in Social Work at the University of East Anglia's School of Social Work. He holds a PhD from UEA and has 8 years of professional experience as a social worker and team manager in Norfolk. His research focuses on sensemaking in social work, supervision practices, and social work education. He currently serves as Course Director for Continuing Professional Development programs and Deputy Admissions Director in the School. He is also an External Examiner at the University of Sussex and a member of the Centre for Research on Children and Families at UEA.
Mark earned a first class honours degree in Philosophy & Politics (2004), followed by Masters in Social Philosophy, Social Work, and Advanced Social Work (Children & Families) from UEA. His PhD (completed in 2021) explored how supervisory discussions support social workers' sensemaking in children and families cases using an ethnographic approach.
His key research interests include understanding how social workers are supported in their roles, particularly through practice education, simulated practice, and interprofessional learning. He has led projects such as the 'Scoping Exercise: Children's Social Care Research' funded by NIHR and 'Research Commission for practice learning assessment' supported by Social Work England.
Mark has contributed to national reports on practice education in England and has published extensively on reflective interventions, supervision, and team dynamics in social work. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications to enhance social work training and professional development.
In terms of professional contributions, he has presented findings through webinars and media engagements, emphasizing the importance of addressing challenges in practice education to sustain effective social work practice.
