Mark Goulthorpe is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Architecture, where he teaches undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. His research focuses on digital design and fabrication, including robotic fabrication, composite methodologies, and dynamically reconfigurable architectural systems like the HypoSurface. He leads the Design Stream in the SMArchS program and directs interdisciplinary teams through dECOi Architects, HypoSurface, and Zero+ initiatives.
- Established Kuka robotic fabrication facility (MIT-IDC collaboration)
- Recipient of multiple awards including FEIDAD, Tomorrow Award, and Mass Challenge finalist
- Authored books on digital architecture and co-authored projects with international collaborators
His work explores material innovation and carbon-efficient technologies, targeting applications in second-world housing markets and high-profile architectural installations.
