Mark Girolami is the Sir Kirby Laing Professor of Civil Engineering and Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair at the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering. He also serves as the Chief Scientist of the Alan Turing Institute, leading its Data Centric Engineering Programme. Previously, he held the Chair of Statistics at Imperial College London and was a founding Executive Director of the Alan Turing Institute.
His research focuses on computational statistics, Bayesian methodology, and statistical approaches to numerical methods, with applications in engineering and natural sciences. Key projects include the Data Centric Engineering initiative and the Digital Twin of a 3D-Printed Stainless Steel Bridge collaboration with MX3D. He is Editor-in-Chief of Statistics and Computing and Data Centric Engineering.
- Awards: Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, Guy Medal in Silver, EPSRC Fellowships, and Fellowships of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society of Edinburgh.
- Advising & Grants: Offers research opportunities across academic levels; leads EPSRC-funded projects and chairs the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Programme on Data Centric Engineering.
His team collaborates with the Data Analytics for Resources & Environments (DARE) Centre and the ARC Research Hub for Offshore Floating Facilities. Recent activities include keynote lectures on Lord Kelvin’s legacy and advancements in probabilistic numerical computation.
