معرفی
Mark G. Alford is a Professor of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, where he has held academic ranks from Assistant Professor (2003–2007) to his current position since 2010. His research focuses on understanding ultra-high-density matter in neutron star cores, quark matter phases, and their astrophysical implications. Alford’s work bridges particle physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, and astrophysics, with contributions to numerical lattice QCD, neutron star merger simulations, and equation-of-state modeling.
He holds a PhD from Harvard University (1990), an AM from Harvard (1987), and a BA from Oxford University (Exeter College). His professional history includes roles at MIT, the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and the University of Glasgow.
Research themes include color superconductivity in quark matter, neutron star dynamics, and viscous dissipation in mergers. Notable contributions include studies on bulk viscosity mechanisms, neutron star merger opacities, and hybrid star models constrained by NICER observations. Teaching spans graduate and undergraduate courses in quantum physics, computational methods, and physics of sustainable energy.
Publications (15 most recent listed) highlight advancements in dense matter theory, neutron star mergers, and multi-messenger astrophysics. His work often addresses neutrino processes, equation-of-state construction, and relativistic hydrodynamics.
