Mark G Duggan is the Wayne and Jodi Cooperman Professor of Economics at Stanford University, affiliated with the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the editorial board of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from MIT (1992–1994) and a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard (1999). His academic career includes faculty roles at the University of Chicago (1999–2003), University of Maryland (2003–2011), and University of Pennsylvania (2011–2014).
His research focuses on health care economics and the impact of government programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Recent work examines disability programs, the Affordable Care Act, and wildfire smoke health effects. His findings appear in top journals and media like The New York Times. Funders include the National Science Foundation and NIH.
Awarded the ASHEcon Medal (2010) and 2011 Health Care Research Award, Duggan has held roles such as Senior Economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers (2009–2010) and Director of Stanford’s Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR, 2015–2024). He teaches economics at both undergraduate and graduate levels and has advised over 60 Ph.D. students. Recognized for teaching excellence, he also received Stanford’s Miriam Aaron Roland Volunteer Service Prize (2025).
