معرفی
Dr. Mark Farrar is a Senior Lecturer in Photobiology at the Division of Musculoskeletal & Dermatological Sciences, University of Manchester. He holds an Honorary Clinical Photobiologist position at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (since 2022). His research focuses on vitamin D synthesis, DNA damage from UV radiation, photoprotection strategies, and skin aging, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) 1st Class in Medical Microbiology, University of Leeds (1996)
- PhD in Skin Microbiology, University of Leeds (2000)
- PGCertHE in Higher Education, University of Manchester (2023)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AdvanceHE, 2022)
Research Interests:
Dr. Farrar’s work examines the balance between UV-induced vitamin D synthesis and DNA damage, dietary photoprotection (e.g., green tea catechins), and seasonal vitamin D deficiency in populations. He leads projects like ‘Sunlight Exposure and Vitamin D Status in the UK’s Ageing Population’ and collaborates with international experts in photobiology and dermatology.
Media and Awards:
His research has been featured in media outlets like That’s Manchester Headline News and has received policy citations. He is a member of the European Society for Photobiology and British Society for Investigative Dermatology.
Grants and Activities:
Dr. Farrar has secured funding for projects on vitamin D and skin health. He organized the IUPB-ESP World Congress on Light and Life (2019) and delivered invited talks on topics like vitamin D during the pandemic and UV exposure risks.
Labs and Platforms:
He contributes to research platforms like the Manchester Institute for Collaborative Research on Ageing and Manchester Environmental Research Institute.
