Mark Evan Schwartz is a Professor of Screenwriting at Loyola Marymount University's nationally-ranked School of Film and Television. He joined LMU in 2000 after a prolific industry career as a screenwriter for Roger Corman, production assistant to Francis Ford Coppola, and story/development executive for films like When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride. He emphasizes fostering student creativity and First Amendment values in courses such as Intermediate Screenwriting, Screenwriting Thesis, and his curriculum-developed Adaptation class.
His teaching philosophy prioritizes independent creative voices through small-class collaboration, echoed in LMU's mission. This summer, he leads Beginning Screenwriting in LMU’s Summer Programs, guiding high school students to craft polished short screenplays. Notable influences include filmmakers Stanley Kubrick and Robert Altman, with a personal favorite film being 1962’s To Kill a Mockingbird.
