Dr. Mark Ellis is an international criminal law expert and Adjunct Professor at Florida State University of Law. He serves as Executive Director of the International Bar Association (IBA), leading initiatives such as the eyeWitness to Atrocities app and providing critical support to Ukraine. His career spans roles as Legal Advisor to the Independent International Commission on Kosovo, Chair of the UN-created Advisory Panel on Defence Counsel, and founder of the American Bar Association’s Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative.
- Education: BS in Economics (USA), J.D. (Florida State University), PhD in Law (2010).
Research focuses on sovereignty, international criminal justice, and post-conflict legal frameworks. His 2015 book Sovereignty and Justice explores complementarity between international and domestic tribunals. Awards include the Order Defender of the Ukrainian Bar (2022) and King’s Distinguished Alumni Award (2023).
Advising and grants include leadership in trials like Serbia’s War Crimes Tribunal and Saddam Hussein’s trial. He chairs the Central and Eastern European Law Initiative and has been recognized as a top human rights lawyer by Lawyer Magazine.
