Mark Dredze is a John C. Malone Professor of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, where he serves as the interim deputy director of the Data Science and AI Institute and associate head of research and strategic initiatives for the Department of Computer Science. He also holds a joint appointment in the Biomedical Informatics & Data Science Section of the Department of Medicine at the School of Medicine.
Education:
- BS in Computer Science and Computer Engineering from Northwestern University
- MA in Jewish Studies from Yeshiva University
- PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania (Adviser: Fernando Pereira)
His research focuses on statistical language models with applications in social media analysis, public health, and clinical informatics. He pioneers information extraction methods for NLP tasks like sentiment analysis, semantics, and spoken language processing, while addressing public health challenges in tobacco control, vaccinations, mental health, and gun violence prevention.
Recent publications highlight his work in generative AI safety, factuality verification, and clinical NLP applications, spanning health equity, medical records analysis, and social media-based epidemiology.
