Mark D. Ediger is the Hyuk Yu Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison within the College of Letters & Science. His research focuses on molecular-level dynamics in polymeric materials and low molecular weight glass formers, with emphasis on supercooled liquids, diffusion in thin films, and the creation of exceptionally stable glasses.
Educational Background:
- B.A. in Chemistry from Bethel College (1979)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University (1984)
His work explores how material structure and atomic interactions influence dynamics, particularly near interfaces and at nanoscales. Techniques include neutron reflectivity, SIMS, nanocalorimetry, x-ray reflectivity, and ellipsometry. Applications span organic electronics and fundamental thermodynamics, addressing the Kauzmann entropy paradox.
Current research also investigates deformation-induced mobility in polymer glasses and nanocomposites, revealing how mechanical stress transforms glasses into viscous liquids. These discoveries have implications for material stability and energy dissipation in nanoscale devices.
