Mark Cooker is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia (UEA) within the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, affiliated with the Fluids & Structures group. Previously, he held roles as a lecturer and senior lecturer at UEA until his retirement in 2021. He earned a BA and MSc in Mathematics from Oxford University and a PhD in 'The interaction between steep water waves and coastal structures' from Bristol University. His research focuses on fluid mechanics, particularly unsteady water waves, violent flows (e.g., splashes, liquid jets), and their impacts on coastal structures. He has contributed to projects on dam-break flows, aircraft water-landing safety, and historical mathematical studies like Kepler's work.
Teaching spans undergraduate to postgraduate levels, including fluid mechanics, calculus history, and mathematical modeling for scientists. Notable collaborations include EU-funded SMAES (2011–2014) and Royal Society-funded water impact studies. His work addresses real-world challenges like wave-induced pressures on ships and harbor walls, as well as theoretical advancements in free-surface flow dynamics.
