Professor Peter Nielsen is a distinguished academic in the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland, with affiliations to both the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology and the Centre for Marine Science. His research spans fluid mechanics, coastal processes, and sediment transport, with significant contributions to understanding dam-break waves, tsunami dynamics, and coastal erosion mechanisms.
His research interests focus on fluid mechanics broadly, water waves, coastal flooding, beach erosion, coastal groundwater issues, and dam-break waves and steady bores and surges (a new area of experimental and theoretical work from 2021). His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical applications in coastal engineering, addressing critical challenges related to climate change impacts on coastal environments.
Analysis of Professor Nielsen's recent publications reveals a strong focus on sediment transport mechanisms, particularly under extreme conditions such as dam-break waves and tsunami events. His research demonstrates expertise in both experimental and theoretical approaches, with increasing emphasis on multiscale modeling of coastal processes. Professor Nielsen has successfully supervised numerous PhD and Master's students across a wide range of coastal engineering topics, from inlet morphodynamics to wave runup on cliffs. His research has been supported by significant funding from the Australian Research Council and other organizations since 1995, with ongoing projects including 'Managing the existing and emerging threats from coastal flow slides' (2021-2024).
His laboratory work in the Civil Engineering Hydraulics lab has produced innovative research on sediment transport by dam-break waves, where extremely high bed shear stresses occur for very short durations.
