Associate Professor Mark Chou is a political scientist and lawyer specializing in democratic theory, local governance, and populism. He holds academic positions at the Australian National University (ANU) and previously at Australian Catholic University (ACU). He earned his PhD from the University of Queensland in 2010 and holds degrees from ANU. His research focuses on democracy’s sustainability, local politics, and the intersection of populism with local governance. Key works include books on culture wars, political meritocracy, and civic participation.
Mark’s career includes roles as Head of the National School of Arts at ACU and a McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Melbourne. He is Deputy Chair of the Australian Political Studies Association and co-editor of the Palgrave/Springer democracy book series. Current projects include an ARC-funded study on populism and localism ($312,265 AUD).
Research interests span democratic theory, local governance challenges, and comparative political frameworks. His articles address climate policy, cultural conflicts in local governments, and the dangers of localism. Mark actively contributes to policy debates via advisory roles, such as the Municipal Association of Victoria’s FutureGen Panel.
