Jean-Paul GAGNON is a Senior Lecturer in Public Policy & Public Administration at the University of Canberra, with a focus on democratic theory. He co-founded the journal Democratic Theory and co-edits the The Theories, Concepts and Practices of Democracy book series. His research spans three programs: cataloging democracy’s adjectives (1,217 identified), exploring non-human democracy, and globalizing democracy’s history.
- Education: PhD in Political Science from Queensland University of Technology (2010).
- Leadership Roles: Editor of The Annual Review for the Sciences of the Democracies (2023–present), Steering Committee Chair at the European Consortium of Political Research (2023–present).
His recent articles address democratic pluralism, racialized governance, and economic democratization. He investigates democracy’s epistemology, interspecies governance, and democratic futures. Collaborative works include debates with scholars like John Keane, Noam Chomsky, and Thomas Seeley.
While GAGNON’s studentship supervision is open to innovative projects (e.g., Berliner democracy, non-human collective action), no specific student names are provided in the texts. His scientific awards are unlisted, though he holds editorial and leadership roles. GAGNON’s emails include Jean-Paul.Gagnon@canberra.edu.au, and his work is marked by interdisciplinary collaboration across political science, social theory, and evolutionary studies.
