Dr Mark Carver is a Lecturer in TESOL and International Education at the International Education & Lifelong Learning Institute, University of St Andrews, where he also serves as Director of Short Courses. He is actively involved in doctoral supervision and curriculum development, particularly in the professional doctorate in TESOL.

His research focuses on teacher professional learning, assessment design, feedback mechanisms, and teacher education. He employs creative qualitative methods, survey design, and mixed-methods approaches. His recent publications (2018–2025) span books, journal articles, and digital tools, with a strong emphasis on authenticity in language assessment, doctoral education, and internationalisation. Themes include AI in education, epistemic capital, and professional doctorates, reflecting a shift toward critical and systemic perspectives in educational research.
He was awarded the McCall MacBain Foundation Teaching Excellence Award in 2020, recognizing his contributions to pedagogy.
Dr Carver supervises doctoral students in TESOL and related fields and is involved in research grants and collaborative projects, such as the Measuring Quality in Initial Teacher Education (www.mquite.scot). He frequently delivers invited talks on topics like generative AI in doctoral work and assessment post-AI. He also hosts academic visitors, indicating active scholarly collaboration.
He contributes to the development of research tools such as the Conceptual Toolkit for Language Teaching Practitioners (CTLTP) and maintains datasets on internationalisation in higher education, demonstrating a commitment to open and impactful scholarship.
