Dr. Mark C. Benfield is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University's College of the Coast and Environment. His research focuses on zooplankton ecology, acoustic sensing, deep-sea biology, and applications of industrial remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in marine observatories. He teaches courses including Introduction to Marine Life Processes and MATLAB for Coastal Sciences.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biology, Texas A&M University (1991)
- M.S. in Biology, University of Natal (1985)
- B.S. in Biology, University of Toronto (1980)
Dr. Benfield's research investigates zooplankton dynamics, optical/acoustic sensing technologies, and deep-sea ecosystems. His work spans computer-based classification of marine organisms, telemetry studies of fish behavior, and ecological assessments of petroleum platforms. Recent field studies examine wreck communities, coral symbiosis, and microplastic distribution in river systems.
His publications demonstrate strong trends in marine technology development, pollution ecology, and ecosystem monitoring. Recent work emphasizes deep learning applications for plankton classification, microplastic pollution tracking, and hydrodynamic modeling of particle transport. The research consistently integrates advanced sensing technologies with ecological questions.
Laboratory facilities include the Energy, Coast and Environment Building (Room 2266) supporting optical/acoustic instrumentation and ROV operations. Collaborative projects involve global institutions including Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the SERPENT Project.
