Joseph D. Warren is a Professor at Stony Brook University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. He serves as Faculty Director of Marine Vertebrate Biology and specializes in bioacoustics and pelagic ecology of zooplankton and fish. His research applies underwater acoustics to study biological and physical oceanographic processes across diverse habitats from shallow estuaries to deep ocean environments.
- Education: B.S. in Engineering with Honors from Harvey Mudd College (1994), Ph.D. in Applied Ocean Sciences from MIT/WHOI Joint Program (2001)
Warren's lab focuses on predator-prey relationships in pelagic ecosystems, acoustic monitoring of marine life, and development of ocean observation systems. His work spans Antarctic krill studies, coastal noise pollution analysis, and advanced sensor technology testing like the VAMPIRE instrument in Bermuda. The lab maintains active field operations with recent deployments at Fire Island artificial reefs and BATS oceanographic cruises.
Recent publications highlight acoustic estimation challenges in zooplankton populations, seasonal copepod dynamics, and anthropogenic noise impacts on coastal soundscapes. The lab welcomes new undergraduate researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in bioacoustic methods and marine ecological studies.
