Dr. Mark Burton is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the School of Human Development and Health. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying age-associated diseases, particularly sarcopenia and muscle dysregulation, with an emphasis on epigenetic regulation and biomarker discovery.
Dr. Burton holds a BSc in Biomedical Sciences (2008-2011) and an MSc in Molecular Neurosciences (2011-2012) from the University of Southampton and University of Bristol, respectively. He completed his PhD at Southampton, investigating folic acid's role in breast cancer epigenetics. His postdoctoral work has involved collaborations with institutions like the University of Western Australia and BenevolentAI, focusing on sarcopenia, non-coding RNAs, and dietary interventions.
His research interests include epigenetic mechanisms in disease, nutritional interventions, and the role of non-coding RNAs in aging. Notable projects include investigating the sncRNA landscape in serum and sperm, as well as studying mitochondrial function and metabolic pathways in aging muscle. He has been awarded the Academy of Medical Sciences Research Prize (2024) and holds grants from NIHR and MyAge.
Dr. Burton is active in teaching and outreach, lecturing on gene regulation and non-coding RNAs. He contributes to the Faculty of Medicine Postdoctoral Association, HDH ED&I committee, and organizes research clubs. His work aims to improve health trajectories through biomarker identification and interventions targeting nutrition and pharmacology.
His recent publications highlight advancements in understanding sarcopenia biomarkers, mitochondrial aging mechanisms, and the impact of dietary interventions on epigenetic profiles. Grants include funding for muscle dysregulation studies and molecular components of sarcopenia research.
Awards and recognitions include the Academy of Medical Sciences Prize for his work on serum sncRNA biomarkers, a NIHR Bridging Fellowship, and MyAge grants. He has also secured funding for collaborative projects and outreach initiatives promoting muscle health in aging populations.
Dr. Burton collaborates with the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Center and the MyAge network, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. His lab focuses on integrating epigenetic, metabolic, and nutritional data to address age-related health challenges.
