Dr Emma Garratt is a Senior Enterprise Fellow at the University of Southampton, specializing in epigenetic mechanisms underlying age-related muscle dysfunction and metabolic disorders. Her research focuses on sarcopenia, gestational diabetes, and developmental origins of health and disease. She collaborates extensively on projects investigating DNA methylation, non-coding RNA biomarkers, and interventions targeting muscle aging.
Her work integrates molecular biology with epidemiological studies, particularly examining how early-life exposures influence later-life health outcomes. Key projects include identifying molecular signatures of sarcopenia-obesity syndromes and developing diagnostic tools for SARS-CoV-2 using novel sequencing technologies.
- Leading the 'Molecular Signature of Sarcopenia Obesity' initiative
- Co-investigator on epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS)
- Published in high-impact journals including Nature Metabolism and Trends in Endocrinology
Current supervision includes PhD candidates researching muscle stem cell biology and epigenetic biomarkers. Her translational research bridges basic science with clinical applications in aging populations.
