Mark Bowker is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Lund University, within the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. He is affiliated with the Cognition & Philosophy VR Lab and conducts research at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and linguistic analysis, with an office located in room LUX:B428 at Helgonavägen 3, Lund.
Dr. Bowker's research focuses on several key philosophical domains:
- Theoretical Philosophy, particularly intentionalism and semantic theory
- Context sensitivity in language and judgment
- Problems in scientific communication and generic generalizations
- Indeterminacy and underdetermination in philosophical and scientific contexts
- Interpretation and discussion in philosophical discourse
His recent publications reveal a consistent exploration of foundational issues across philosophy of language, epistemology, and philosophy of science. Bowker examines how context influences meaning without requiring semantic explanations, analyzes problems with generic generalizations in scientific communication, and investigates how indeterminacy affects philosophical reasoning. His work bridges abstract theoretical concepts with practical applications in scientific discourse.
Bowker led the research project "Prejudice: Source and Propagation" (2022-2024), which examined the origins and mechanisms of prejudice transmission. His collaborative work extends internationally, as evidenced by external collaborations with researchers across different countries. His research has garnered attention on academic social media platforms and academic reference managers like Mendeley.
Through his affiliation with the Cognition & Philosophy VR Lab, Bowker contributes to interdisciplinary approaches that combine philosophical inquiry with cognitive science methodologies, demonstrating his commitment to innovative research at the intersection of traditional philosophy and contemporary technological approaches.
