Mark Bailey is a Professor of Design-led Innovation and Head of Design Research and Knowledge Exchange at Northumbria University's School of Design. He leads the Responsible Design Innovation Practice research group and oversees the MA/MSc Multidisciplinary Innovation (MDI) programme. His work focuses on fostering collaborative innovation across disciplines, bridging academia and industry through projects like Creative Fuse North East and Global Entrepreneurial Talent Management (GETM). He has secured over £1.3m in research funding and collaborated with global firms such as Unilever and Philips.
Education: Holds a DPhil in Design Studies (2021), MA in Design Studies (2015), and BA (Hons) in Industrial Design (1988). A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2002) and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts (RSA).
Research Interests: Design facilitation, multidisciplinary innovation, responsible innovation, design education, and enterprise education. He explores how design approaches empower non-designers and organizations to tackle complex challenges through creativity and collaboration.
Notable Projects: Principal Investigator on Creative Fuse North East (£6m), GETM3/4 (EU-funded), and the Armenian Enterprise Education initiative. His work includes developing innovation readiness programs for SMEs and policy recommendations for Armenia's Ministry of Education.
Awards: Winner of the Research Councils UK Knowledge Base Impact Award (2013) for the Age UK Service Design project. Recognized for contributions to design education and innovation pedagogy.
