Dr. Mark B. Shiflett is the Foundation Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical & Petroleum Engineering at the University of Kansas. He serves as Director of the NSF Engineering Research Center (EARTH) and Director of the Wonderful Institute For Sustainable Engineering. His research focuses on developing sustainable and energy-efficient processes, including ionic liquids, porous materials, and membranes for refrigerant separations, as well as oxalate chemistry for critical metal recycling and biomass conversion into sustainable products.
Research specialties include gravimetric measurements, thermodynamic/transport modeling, reaction/separation engineering, and safety. He leads the Shiflett Research Group, which operates advanced facilities such as a gravimetric microbalance laboratory (-196°C to 1000°C), a 4-bed pressure-swing adsorption system, and analytical equipment like chromatographs and mass spectrometers. The group collaborates with industry partners on projects ranging from discovery-stage concepts to multi-year innovation programs.
Facilities also include a library of over 3,000 advanced materials (zeolites, ionic liquids, carbons, ion-exchange resins) for applications in separations, catalysis, desalination, and biobased chemical extraction. Industrial partnerships emphasize IP-friendly arrangements for sponsored research and contract testing services.
