معرفی
Mark Aarts is a Personal Professor at Wageningen University & Research, working within the Laboratory of Genetics under the Plant Sciences Group. With over 136 research publications and 39 projects (10 currently active), he leads significant research in plant genetics with a focus on metal hyperaccumulation and photosynthetic efficiency. His work bridges fundamental plant science with practical applications in crop improvement and environmental remediation.
Professor Aarts' research primarily focuses on Arabidopsis thaliana and hyperaccumulator species like Noccaea caerulescens (formerly Thlaspi caerulescens), investigating their mechanisms for zinc, cadmium, and nickel uptake, transport, and tolerance. His fingerprint shows strong expertise in photosystem function, genetic regulation of metal homeostasis, and developing novel phenotyping methods for plant traits. Recent work has expanded to include wild crop relatives for improving nutrient use efficiency and climate resilience.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a clear trend toward translating basic genetic discoveries into practical applications. His work increasingly integrates advanced phenotyping technologies, genomic approaches, and physiological studies to address challenges in sustainable agriculture and environmental management. The research spans from molecular mechanisms of metal transporters to field applications for biofortification and phytoremediation.
Professor Aarts actively supervises 21 students, including multiple PhD candidates working on projects related to zinc/nickel hyperaccumulation, wild lettuce relatives for crop resilience, and novel imaging techniques for plant science. His research has attracted substantial funding, supporting both fundamental investigations into plant adaptation mechanisms and applied projects with potential agricultural impact.
His laboratory maintains strong collaborations across Wageningen University and with international partners, evidenced by the diverse projects and datasets. Current research directions include exploiting natural variation in photosynthetic efficiency, understanding metal hyperaccumulation mechanisms for phytoremediation applications, and improving nutrient use efficiency in crop plants through exploration of wild relatives.
