Mark A. Schlautman is a Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University, with additional appointments at the Clemson Experiment Station, Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program, Institute of Environmental Toxicology, and Clemson Environmental Institute. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Science from the California Institute of Technology (1992), preceded by an M.S. (1987) and B.S. in Chemical Engineering (1984). His research focuses on environmental geochemistry, hydrochemistry, and physicochemical treatment processes, with an emphasis on natural and engineered systems such as water treatment plants, soils, and aquifers.
Key research areas include pollutant fate and transport, bioavailability of toxic materials, and interdisciplinary collaborations in computer modeling and biological processes. Schlautman is also a faculty advisor for Clemson’s Engineers Without Borders chapter, supporting projects in Central America and West Africa. He has received notable awards, including the NSF CAREER Award (1999) and Clemson’s Board of Trustees Faculty Excellence Award (2006).
His recent publications address land degradation neutrality, soil health monitoring, and climate action planning across U.S. states like Iowa, Illinois, and New Jersey. Schlautman’s work bridges environmental science with policy, emphasizing UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ecosystem services valuation. He teaches courses in environmental engineering, water treatment systems, and hazardous waste management.
