Dr. Hun Bok Jung is an Environmental Geochemist serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Sciences at Kingsborough Community College, part of the City University of New York system. With over 10 years of teaching experience, he has instructed courses in chemistry, geochemistry, water science, environmental science, energy, climate change, and sustainability at both Kingsborough Community College and New Jersey City University.
Dr. Jung's research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes controlling the transport and fate of toxic contaminants and nutrients in coastal and subsurface environments. His work spans multiple critical areas including groundwater and soil contamination, geologic carbon sequestration, hydraulic fracturing, nanogeochemistry, environmental remediation, and biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and heavy metals in urban estuaries. He has conducted extensive field research on water quality in urban estuaries, nutrient transport from coastal aquifers, heavy metal remediation, and air quality monitoring in Brooklyn.
Analysis of Dr. Jung's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on urban estuary systems, particularly the Newark Bay Estuary, with significant attention to heavy metal contamination (especially chromium and arsenic), radionuclide behavior (uranium), and the role of nanoscale mineral processes in contaminant transport. His work bridges fundamental geochemical processes with practical environmental applications, including carbon sequestration safety, sustainable hydraulic fracturing techniques, and community-based water quality monitoring.
