Dr. Mark A. Gallo is a Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at Niagara University, serving as Pre-health Advisor and actively engaged in microbial genetics research. He chairs the American Society for Microbiology's K-12 education division and contributes to national science education initiatives.
His educational background includes:
- B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of Pittsburgh
- M.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School
- Ph.D. in Microbiology from Cornell University
- Post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Dr. Gallo's research centers on antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Staphylococci isolated from white-tailed deer and genomic characterization of Streptomyces for secondary metabolite production. His laboratory employs microarray technology to analyze genetic markers for resistance and phylogenetic relationships, with implications for agricultural mastitis and novel antibiotic discovery. He integrates scholarship of teaching and learning through extensive K-12 science outreach programs.
He mentors undergraduate researchers in his dual-project laboratory investigating Staphylococci resistance profiles and Streptomyces genomic synteny. Dr. Gallo leads the Committee on Recommendations for Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Students while maintaining active research funding for his current projects.
