Marco Gallo is Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology-Oncology, and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. His laboratory investigates epigenetic and non-coding genome mechanisms driving tumorigenesis in pediatric and adult brain tumors, using integrated approaches combining single-cell genomics, 3D genome analysis, and preclinical models.
Research focuses on intratumoral heterogeneity, cancer stem cell hierarchies, therapy resistance mechanisms, and novel therapeutic vulnerabilities. Major discoveries include TULIPs (novel 3D genome structures in PFA ependymoma), subclonal genetic architecture in pediatric glioblastoma, and the role of macroH2A2 in glioblastoma epigenetic programs. The lab develops computational tools like Copy-scAT for deconvoluting single-cell chromatin accessibility of genetic subclones.
Dr. Gallo's team maintains patient-derived xenograft models and cell lines to study cancer evolution and validate therapeutic targets. Current projects examine metabolic rewiring in brain tumors, spatial epigenomic niches, and EZHIP's role in synaptic gene programming. His work is supported by grants from NIH, CPRIT, and Stand Up To Cancer.
