Mark A. Buchheim serves as Professor and Chair of the Biological Science department within the College of Engineering & Natural Sciences at the University of Tulsa, specializing in the diversity and evolutionary biology of eukaryotic microbes with emphasis on green algae and flagellates.
His educational foundation includes:
- Ph.D. from The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Dissertation: "A Structural and Systematic Study of the Sphaeropleaceae (Chlorophyceae) With Special Reference to Sphaeroplea")
- M.S. from Iowa State University (Dissertation: "The effects of copper on three stages in the asexual life cycle of Haematococcus lacustris (Chlorophyceae)")
- B.A. from Wartburg College
Professor Buchheim's research integrates molecular, ultrastructural, and morphological analyses to investigate evolutionary patterns in green flagellates (Chlamydomonas, Dunaliella, Haematococcus) and the order Sphaeropleales (Chlorophyceae). His work advances fundamental understanding of algal systematics, intragenomic variation, and environmental adaptations in microalgal taxa, contributing to broader fields of microbial ecology and phylogenetics.
His recognition includes:
- Provasoli Award (2011) for Outstanding Paper in the Journal of Phycology
He directs the Buchheim Lab at the University of Tulsa, which maintains active research programs in green algal diversity, Haematococcus biology, and intragenomic variation studies, fostering collaborative investigations into microalgal evolution and function.
