Marjorie Sarbaugh-Thompson is a Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy from the University of Michigan (1992). Her research focuses on state legislatures, legislative term limits, legislative oversight mechanisms, Michigan politics, and policy analysis. She has led a decade-long study on legislative term limits in Michigan, culminating in the book *Implementing Term Limits: The Case of the Michigan Legislature* (2017). Her work also examines legislative oversight practices, redistricting commissions, and the impact of term limits on political representation and institutional dynamics.
Key projects include a 50-state study on legislative oversight of executive branches, funded by the Levin Center and the Center for Urban Studies. She has published widely on Michigan’s political landscape, including analyses of the 2024 election’s role in presidential politics and the implications of Detroit’s redistricting reforms. Awards include the 2006 Outstanding Faculty Award and the 1996 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Her grants include research on legislative oversight of state contracts (2020) and a 2017 study on legislative decision-making complexity. Collaborations involve WSU colleagues like Lyke Thompson and Wayne State Political Science students. She teaches courses such as Michigan Politics, Organization Theory, and Policy Analysis for Administration.
