Adam J. Hollier is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at Wayne State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. A lifelong Detroiter with deep community roots, he combines academic work with extensive public service. Hollier holds a B.S. from Cornell University and a Master of Urban Planning (M.U.P.) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
His career spans disaster relief coordination post-Hurricane Katrina, U.S. Army Reserve service as a paratrooper and team chief, legislative roles in the Michigan Legislature, and tenure as Director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency under Governor Whitmer. He has advocated for veteran services, criminal justice reform, and infrastructure investments like lead pipe replacement and Factory Zero in Detroit.
Politically, Hollier ran for Michigan State Senate (2018–2023) and has twice sought the U.S. House seat for Michigan’s 13th District. His teaching focuses on urban studies across disciplines, including courses like Introduction to Urban Studies (PS2000/GPH2000/HIS2000/US2000) and specialized topics in urban geography and planning.
Committed to Detroit’s revitalization, he balances academic instruction with policy advocacy, leveraging his military, legislative, and grassroots organizing experience to address urban challenges.
