Marjorie A. Olmstead is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington, Seattle. She serves as Associate Chair of Physics for Undergraduate Affairs, overseeing undergraduate academic programs and advising. Her research focuses on intrinsic vacancy materials such as Ga₂Se₃, Ga₂O₃, and (Sr,Ba)Nb₂O₆, exploring their applications in transparent conductors, thermoelectrics, and multifunctional materials. She teaches advanced undergraduate courses like Physics 423 (Contemporary Condensed Matter Physics) and actively advises students in the Physics Undergraduate Program.
Research Interests: Her experimental work investigates electronic and structural properties of vacancy-engineered materials with potential for energy and electronics applications. Key areas include phase transitions, conductivity mechanisms, and material synthesis techniques. Labs are located in the Physics-Astronomy Building (PAB B049/B009).
Administration & Teaching: Prof. Olmstead is deeply involved in curriculum development and student support within the College of Arts & Sciences. She chairs undergraduate affairs and maintains close ties with the Department of Chemistry through interdisciplinary collaborations.
