Dr. Marjolijn Bol is an Associate Professor of Technical Art History at the Department of History and Art History, University of Utrecht, where she leads the ERC-funded DURARE project (2020-2025). She specializes in the intersection of art history, material science, and historical craftsmanship, with particular focus on material mimesis, artistic durability, and pre-industrial craft knowledge.
- Established the Utrecht ArtLab (2018) for interdisciplinary research on art materials
- Co-editor of Studies in Art & Materiality (Brill) and Art Matters journal
- Member of De Jonge Akademie (KNAW) and Utrecht Young Academy
Research Focus combines technical analysis of historical artworks with experimental reconstructions to uncover material knowledge transmission. Key projects include:
