Marja Jalava is a Professor in the History of Society at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Tampere University, specializing in Finnish and Nordic history within a European context (1800–1980). Her research explores modern industrial capitalism's emergence through historical animal studies, historiography, intellectual history, and the history of emotions. She supervises PhD theses, teaches MA seminars on historiography, and leads research projects funded by the Finnish Research Council and Kone Foundation.

Her research focuses on animal-human co-production in Finnish agro-modernization (1880s–1960s), modern subjectivity formation, and the role of universities in Nordic welfare state development. She holds leadership roles in Tampere University's administrative bodies, including the Doctoral Education Steering Committee and Research Committee. Her advisory roles span projects at Södertörn University, University of Oulu, and Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, with editorial board memberships across Finnish historical and literary publications.
