Mariyana Zapryanova is an Associate Professor of Economics at Smith College. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a B.A. in economics and mathematics from Lake Forest College.

Her research focuses on empirical microeconomics, particularly in law and economics, economics of crime, and public economics. Key areas include prisoner reentry, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and the impact of environmental and policy factors on crime and recidivism. Recent work examines Medicaid's role in recidivism, temperature effects on judicial rulings, and peer influences on post-release outcomes.
Her publications span topics like mandatory minimum laws, judicial decision-making, and cross-regional criminal justice disparities. Trends in her work highlight empirical analysis of policy interventions and structural inequalities.
