Mariya Munir

Dr. Mariya Munir is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her research addresses critical challenges in water quality, antibiotic resistance, and sustainable treatment technologies, with affiliations extending to the interdisciplinary CIPHER research center.

Research Focus: Dr. Munir's work spans:

• Antibiotic resistance dynamics in water/soil environments
• Detection and inactivation of emerging contaminants
• Wastewater surveillance (e.g., SARS-CoV-2 tracking)
• Light-activated nanoparticles for bacterial elimination
• Biochar applications for sustainable stormwater management

Student Advising & Recognition: She mentors PhD students whose research on nanoparticles, viral detection, and biochar has earned 1st-place awards at national/international conferences. Examples include CITRANS 2025, GPSG GRS 2025, and SLMP 2024.
