Mariusz Szram

Mariusz Szram is a Professor of Theological Sciences at the Faculty of Theology, John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, specializing in patrology, allegorical Alexandrian exegesis, and heresy studies. He has served as Head of the Department of Greek and Latin Patrology since 2018.

• Education: Master’s in Theology (1983–1989, Warmia Theological Seminary and Catholic University of Lublin), Master’s in Classical Philology (1990–1996, Catholic University of Lublin), Doctorate in Patrology (1996, Lublin) on Origen’s Christology, Habilitation (2002) on number symbolism in Alexandrian exegesis.

Research Interests focus on philosophical-theological thought (Christology, anthropology, eschatology, aretology), allegorical exegesis in the Alexandrian tradition (3rd–5th centuries), heretical movements in the ancient Church, reception of Greek philosophy in patristic thought, and methodology of patristic research. His publications (200+ works, 5 books) analyze Origen, Philastrius of Brescia, and the intersection of theology and Hellenistic philosophy.

Scientific Awards include the Bronze Medal of the President of Poland (2010) and multiple Rector’s Awards for scholarly excellence. He co-edited 10 collective works and serves on editorial boards of Verbum Vitae and Vox Patrum.

• Supervised 7 doctoral theses in patrology, including topics like Didymus of Alexandria’s aretology and Origen’s demonology.
• Leadership Roles: Chair of the Commission for Research on Christian Antiquity (2016–present), President of the Patristic Section (2007–2017), and member of academic societies like the International Association of Patrologists.

Conferences organized include Christians of the Patristic Period in Relation to Nature (2024) and Patristic Biblical Exegesis (2019). He has collaborated with scholars from Rome, Paris, Lviv, and Copenhagen.
