Marius Andruh is a distinguished Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Chemistry, where he has served since 1996. He currently directs the Doctorate School in Chemistry (since 2005) and heads the Inorganic Chemistry Department. His academic journey spans over four decades, progressing from Research Assistant (1982-1984) through Assistant Professor (1984-1990), Lecturer (1990-1994), and Associate Professor (1994-1996) to his current professorship.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. (1988) from University of Bucharest on Coordination Compounds of Fe(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) with Pyridine Derivatives
- Post-doctoral research at Institut für Anorganische Chemie der Universität Göttingen (1992-1993) under Professor Herbert W. Roesky
- Post-doctoral research at Université de Paris-Sud (1991-1992) under Professor Olivier Kahn
- M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry (1979) from University of Bucharest
Professor Andruh's research centers on the chemistry of polynuclear coordination compounds, with particular expertise in homo- and heteropolynuclear complexes, metallosupramolecular chemistry, and crystal engineering. His work on magnetic properties of polymetallic complexes has established him as a leading figure in this specialized field. His research has significant implications for materials science and molecular magnetism.
His numerous accolades include:
- Nenitzescu–Criegee Lectureship awarded by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (2009)
- For Merit National Order (2008)
- G.Spacu Medal of the Romanian Chemical Society (2009)
- Member of the Romanian Academy (Full Member since April 2009)
- Member of Academia Europaea (2004)
Professor Andruh has held significant editorial and leadership positions including Editor-in-Chief of Revue Roumaine de Chimie, President of the Inorganic Chemistry Division of the Romanian Chemical Society (since 1997), and President of the National Chemistry Olympiad (since 2006). His extensive international collaborations are evidenced by numerous visiting professorships at prestigious institutions across Europe including Université de Bordeaux, Universität Göttingen, and University of Manchester.
With 175 published papers, 6 books, and 3 patents to his name, Professor Andruh maintains an active research profile while serving as a referee for numerous high-impact chemistry journals including Journal of the American Chemical Society and Chemical Communications.
