Marissa A. Flaherty

Dr. Marissa A. Flaherty is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, concurrently serving as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. She holds a B.A. in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Johns Hopkins University (2010) and an M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (2014). Her psychiatric residency training at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt program emphasized clinical excellence, research, and education.

Her research focuses on severe mental illnesses (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder), community mental health, and improving medical education. Notable projects include studies on chronic fatigue syndrome pathophysiology, vitamin D and depression, and behavioral emergency protocols. She has authored/co-authored peer-reviewed articles and numerous conference posters.

Dr. Flaherty is deeply engaged in teaching, serving as Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (2020-2022) and previously as Chief Resident (2017-2018). Her advocacy work addresses mental health resource disparities in Baltimore. Awards include the Balis Award for Medical Student Education and multiple research honors.

She collaborates with law enforcement on violence reduction initiatives and advises on interdisciplinary behavioral emergency protocols. Current efforts focus on physician well-being and mental health advocacy in underserved communities.
