Maris Laan is a Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Tartu, Faculty of Medicine, with a focus on medical genetics and reproductive medicine. She holds concurrent appointments at the Institute of Biomedicine and Translational Medicine and has served as Vice Dean in Research since 2024.

Her research spans male infertility, placental health, and genetic disorders. Notable contributions include identifying genomic variants in infertile men and developing biomarkers for preeclampsia. She has secured major grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Wellcome Trust.
Recent publications highlight her work on exome sequencing for infertility diagnostics, DMRT1 mutations, and RASopathies in reproductive health. Awards include the Estonian National Science Award 2010 and the Baltic Academies of Sciences Medal 2019.
She has supervised over 15 PhD students and >30 undergraduate researchers in biology, gene technology, and medicine. Her administrative roles include membership in the Estonian Science Foundation and leadership in international conferences like the European Human Genetics Conference.
