Marion Wells is a Professor in the English and American Literatures Department at Middlebury College, affiliated with the Women and Gender Studies Program. She holds a BA in Classics and Modern Languages from Oxford University and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Yale University. Her research focuses on early modern English and Italian literature, classical texts, gender studies, and the history of medicine.
Her published works include The Secret Wound: Love-Melancholy and Early Modern Romance (Stanford University Press, 2007). She is currently writing a book on maternal representations in early modern Europe, tentatively titled The Nightingale’s Song: Maternal Voices in Early Modern Europe.
Professor Wells teaches courses such as 'Critical Conditions: Gender, Literature, and Illness' and 'Reading Women's Writing,' emphasizing intersections of gender, race, and literary analysis. She advises senior theses in comparative literature and creative writing, guiding students through rigorous literary projects.
