Mario Shihabi serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, where he has been employed since 2021—initially as Assistant and promoted to Senior Assistant in 2024. His work is centered in the conservation genetics laboratory located in the 2nd Pavilion, 2nd floor, focusing on genomic applications for domestic animal populations.
His academic credentials from the University of Zagreb include: a 2024 PhD in Animal Sciences investigating X-chromosome inbreeding and selection; a 2021 MSc in Animal Genetics and Breeding analyzing Croatian sheep genomes; and a 2019 BSc in Agroecology examining quantitative genetics in cheesemaking.
Dr. Shihabi's research integrates genomics, bioinformatics, and population genetics to address conservation challenges in livestock, with particular emphasis on evolutionary processes and quantitative genetic methodologies. His current Croatian Science Foundation project (2023-2027) coordinates innovations in dairy cattle phenomics and genomics.
He teaches Conservation Genetics (157195), Population Genetics (157196), and Basics of Animal Breeding (156990), while leading the conservation genetics laboratory team in developing genomic tools for sustainable animal breeding programs.
