Mario Mencagli is an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Delaware since August 2024. Previously, he held roles at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2019–2023) and Raytheon Technology Research Center (2023–2024). He completed his Ph.D. in electromagnetics at the University of Siena, Italy (2016), and postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania under Prof. Nader Engheta. His research focuses on metasurfaces, metamaterials, and their applications in antennas, space technology, and nonlinear optics.
Education:
- B.Sc. and M.Sc. (cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering, University of Siena (2008, 2013)
- Ph.D. (cum laude) in Electromagnetics, University of Siena (2016)
Research Interests: Dr. Mencagli designs reconfigurable metasurface antennas for space applications, explores time-modulated systems for energy trapping, and develops metamaterial-based optical components. His work bridges theoretical electromagnetics with practical applications in radar, remote sensing, and smart materials.
Notable Contributions: He pioneered metasurface antennas compatible with NASA's Deep Space Network and developed prototypes for dual-frequency radar systems. His research on VO₂ dielectric functions and PTD symmetric metastructures has advanced nonlinear optical control and wave manipulation.
- Grants: PI of NASA/JPL grants for metasurface-based space antennas
- Awards: Best Thesis Award (2018), Thales Research Scholarship (2013), IEEE Senior Member
His lab focuses on additive-manufactured metamaterials and wave-based computational systems, aiming to revolutionize antenna design and optical signal processing.
