Mario Francesco Pavone is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Catania. He teaches Operating Systems and Artificial Intelligence, focusing on the integration of metaheuristics with machine learning techniques for applications in optimization, computational biology, complex networks, reverse engineering, detection/prediction activities, and collective behavior dynamics.
He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Swarm Intelligence and holds editorial roles at journals like Soft Computing, Frontiers in Big Data, and Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence. He actively participates in program committees of international conferences in evolutionary computation, reviews research projects, and evaluates PhD theses globally.
Pavone founded and directs the Metaheuristics Summer School (MESS), fostering international collaborations through conferences and summer schools. He co-leads the Complex Intelligent Systems research group (CIS-Lab) and has been a keynote speaker at events like INTIS 2024. His editorial contributions span special issues in journals such as International Transactions in Operational Research and Swarm and Evolutionary Computation.
