Mario Fernando Mendez is a Professor-in-Residence in the Department of Neurology at UCLA's School of Medicine. His academic career has focused on neurodegenerative disorders, particularly early-onset Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. Dr. Mendez has been a Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded research projects including 'Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease Phenotypes: Neuropsychology and Neural Networks' and 'Multidisciplinary Study of Social Behavior and Emotion in Frontotemporal Dementia.'
Dr. Mendez's research interests encompass a wide range of topics in behavioral neurology and cognitive neuroscience. His work primarily investigates the neuropsychological profiles, neural networks, and clinical phenotypes associated with various forms of dementia. He has made significant contributions to understanding the differences between early-onset and late-onset Alzheimer's disease, as well as the behavioral and cognitive aspects of frontotemporal dementia. His research often examines the relationship between brain structure/function and clinical manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases.
Analysis of Dr. Mendez's recent publications reveals a strong focus on multi-center collaborative research through major consortia including the ALLFTD Consortium and the LEADS Consortium. His work spans neuroimaging techniques (particularly PET and MRI), biomarker discovery, clinical phenotyping, and behavioral assessments in dementia populations. Recent publications demonstrate his ongoing investigation into socioeconomic factors affecting cognitive outcomes, neural correlates of behavioral symptoms, and the development of clinical trial methodologies for early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Mendez has mentored numerous researchers through his involvement in large multi-center studies and has contributed significantly to the field through his extensive publication record. His work often bridges clinical neurology with cognitive neuroscience to better understand the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders. He has also explored applications of neuroimaging in distinguishing various forms of dementia and investigating the neural basis of behavioral symptoms.
