Mario Cancel-Bigay is a Research Fellow at Columbia University's Department of Music, where he teaches Contemporary Civilization. Born in Puerto Rico in 1982, he holds a B.A. in Modern Languages (Portuguese and French) from the University of Puerto Rico (2005), an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from New York University (2014), and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Columbia University (2021).
His research focuses on anticolonial and decolonial frameworks through musical resistance movements in Puerto Rico and Québec during the 1960s–70s, including the analysis of nueva canción and chanson québécoise. As a singer-songwriter and poet, he also engages with Puerto Rican cultural heritage through the cuatro, a national instrument of Puerto Rico.
He currently serves as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia, contributing to academic and cultural discourse through his interdisciplinary work. Mario is also the proud father of Gabriela, a Puerto Rican-Haitian daughter.
