Professor Mario Avila is a faculty member at Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management, serving as the Faculty Director of the Center for Social Ventures. His work focuses on entrepreneurship, social impact, and financial technology. He teaches MBA and Executive Education courses at the intersection of entrepreneurship, sports, and social impact, and leads interdisciplinary programs like Project Pyramid, which addresses global poverty through business solutions.
Education: MBA from Vanderbilt University (2012), B.A. from Dartmouth College (2004).
Research interests include social enterprise leadership, fintech innovation, and ethical business practices. He has been recognized with awards such as Nashville’s 40 Under 40 and the Harvard Young American Leaders designation. His professional experience includes roles as CEO of Emerge and founder of Contigo Financial, a B Corp-certified fintech lender.
Leadership roles include chairing Vanderbilt University’s Credit Union and serving on boards like Conéxion Americas and the Nashville Food Project. He has also contributed to global initiatives, including a hybrid housing-microfinance model in Central America through Vanderbilt’s Cal Turner Program.
