Marina Echebarría Sáenz is a full professor of Commercial Law at the University of Valladolid, where she has held roles such as vice-dean and director of the Commercial Law Department. She contributes to the university’s Equality Unit and specializes in research areas including commercial distribution, blockchain applications, cryptocurrency payments, and challenges in digital marketplaces like Amazon.
Earning her PhD in 1995 from the University of Valladolid with a thesis on franchise contracts, she bridges legal scholarship with technological innovation. Her activism spans over two decades, advocating for transgender rights and LGBTI equality. She chairs Spain’s first national LGBTI Participation Council and previously served as vice-president of the Triángulo Foundation. She played a pivotal role in drafting Spain’s 2007 law on sex registry changes and regional trans legislation.
As the first trans woman to hold a university chair in Spain, she highlights systemic gender disparities in academia and public policy. Her advocacy emphasizes depathologizing transgender identities and advancing equal rights across healthcare, employment, and legal recognition.
