Marika Silvikko serves as an Academy Research Fellow within the Department of Design at Aalto University's School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Her position, funded by the Academy of Finland, establishes her as an independent researcher focusing on critical energy and nuclear governance challenges.
Her research investigates socio-technical transitions through two primary lenses: hybrid energy configurations in Finnish households and socio-technical imaginaries in nuclear waste management. Employing Science and Technology Studies (STS) frameworks, she examines citizen agency in heating system adoption and transdisciplinary approaches to radioactive waste disposal. Key themes include peer-support networks in energy transitions, socio-technical divides in risk perception, and the normalization of nuclear safety through cultural familiarization.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent interdisciplinary collaboration across Finland and internationally, with recurring co-authors including Sini Numminen, Sampsa Hyysalo, and nuclear governance experts like Catrinel Turcanu. Her work bridges engineering, social sciences, and policy studies, emphasizing practical applications for sustainable transitions.
She actively contributes to the Inuse research group at Aalto University, which focuses on sustainable design and user-centered energy solutions. Her Academy Research Fellowship provides dedicated resources for advancing independent research on energy system hybridization and nuclear waste governance.
