Marieke Oderkerk is Full Professor of Private International Law and Comparative Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Law and Kooijmans Institute, with part-time affiliation as Associate Professor at University of Amsterdam. She serves as deputy judge at Amsterdam Court of Appeal since 2013 and holds editorial/board positions at Netherlands International Law Review, Tijdschrift voor Familie- en Jeugdrecht, and Nederlandse Vereniging voor Rechtsvergelijking.
Her research spans doctrinal private international law, international family law, PIL consumer law, and platform economy regulation. She pioneers comparative empirical methodologies to address cross-border societal issues, particularly in family and property law contexts. Recent initiatives examine digital platform governance and consumer protection frameworks across jurisdictions.
Publications demonstrate strong focus on child welfare in transnational family disputes, energy transition policy comparisons, and methodological rigor in legal research. Articles consistently address practical implementation of private international law principles in emerging societal challenges.
Teaching encompasses Master-level courses in International Private Law, Notarial International Private Law, and specialized Masterclasses. She previously directed University of Amsterdam's Master Privaatrecht program (2019-2022).
Her academic trajectory includes research coordination at Amsterdam Institute of Private Law (2005-2008) and leadership roles at Amsterdam Centre for Transformative Private Law since 2009. Educational background combines Dutch law (LLM 1993) and Italian language/literature (MA 1991) from University of Amsterdam, with PhD in comparative legal methodology (1999).
