Marie Vibeke Vestergaard is a Research Fellow at Aalborg University's Department of Clinical Medicine, affiliated with The Faculty of Medicine and the Center for Molecular Prediction of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Her PhD project focuses on bioinformatic analysis of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), integrating microbial, genetic, and health register data. She holds a background in molecular medicine and bioinformatics from the University of Aarhus, with prior research on Parkinson's disease and later IBD. Her work emphasizes understanding disease mechanisms through large-scale data analysis.
Key research interests include inflammatory bowel disease subtyping, microbiome analysis, genetic risk factors, and biomarker discovery. She has contributed to projects funded by organizations like the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation and the William Demant Foundation. Her recent studies explore longitudinal biomarker profiles in IBD and genetic determinants of disease severity.
Marie has presented her work at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. Her research has been highlighted in media coverage, including breakthroughs in identifying genetic links to severe ulcerative colitis. She actively contributes to editorial peer review for journals like BMC Medicine and BMC Psychiatry.
Her current project (2022–2025) investigates IBD using Danish registers, genetics, and microbiota data. Collaborations span institutions in Denmark, Scotland, and Poland, reflecting her commitment to global IBD research. She leads efforts in molecular prediction to improve patient stratification and treatment strategies.
